With her second album „Night House“, Caroline Dahl has proved once again that she, as a specimen of the rare species “female boogie woogie pianists”, does not have to hide behind her male colleagues. To the opposite, she interprets the 14 songs mostly written by herself in a way powerful and dynamic but still filled with emotion.

The CD starts out with the “Junebug Boogie” in the style of a classical boogie woogie, however with a very special touch to it. The american artist’s particular very melodical style combined with her love for detail runs through all of the tracks like a red thread. By the means of borrowings from Rumba, Jazz-Waltz and Waltz, Caroline Dahl takes the listener for a phantastic ride through her world of music, never giving away what surprising turn is lurking in the next measure, let alone song.

In the “Mexicali Rose Medley”, we hear the “Spanish Eyes” and even the “Waltz in D minor” by Frederic Chopin nestling in the flow of the familiar boogie as if it was the most obvious matter of course. Like precious flowers by the roadside, the slickly placed accents please the traveler.

Halfway through the album, one can relax a bit listening to tracks like “Night House” or “Waltz for Jake”. Soon after that, the boogie woogie train takes up speed again and goes stomping through the varied landscape, passing River City, the Red River Valley and along the Swanee River.

During the last song “Tearing up heaven”, the listener leans back in satisfaction, having seen (or heard, respectively) a piece of boogie heaven.

The San Francisco pianist is supported by Bowen Brown and Kent Bryson at the drums and Tim Wagar, bass. Tom Rigney plays the violine in one piece, Rob Sudduth the tenor saxophone in two of them. These guys, all seasoned musicians from the San Francisco Bay area, put the finishing touches to the songs.

Caroline Dahl does not only put her swift fingers to use at the piano as becomes obvious by the cover - the design is based on embroideries created by herself.
